Lake Cook Road and Tri-State Tollway Project Begins
The Illinois Tollway is widening the Tri-State Tollway from O'Hare to the Wisconsin state line. The widening is necessary to handle the increased traffic on the Tri-State and to relieve congestion, especially during the rush hours. In order to accomplish the widening, the Lake Cook Road Bridge over the northbound Tri-State Tollway needs to be replaced. To reduce impact on the traveling public, the construction of the new Lake Cook Road Bridge will require three construction stages. To maintain two lanes of traffic in each direction at all times, medians will be removed and temporary pavement will be installed on Lake Cook Road. The existing bridge will be removed to allow a longer bridge to be constructed by Kenny Construction Company. The new bridge will require sheeting to protect the northbound Tri-State while excavation is being performed for the new piers which will rest on steel H-piles. A soil retention system constructed of a wire-faced mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall will allow for the support of the Lake Cook Road pavement between stage lines. Kenny started the project in December, 2007 and will complete construction by December, 2008.
