This project begins construction of the main reservoir portion of the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan ("TARP") which started in the 1970's and is one of the world's larges civil engineering projects. When completed, it will include over 100 miles of tunnels excavated under the City of Chicago connected to three large storm water reservoirs.
Kenny has been selected by Vulcan Materials to perform the primary rock excavation to begin the opening of a major quarry that will eventually become the main reservoir of the Mainstream TARP system protecting the downtown area of Chicago. Vulcan will quarry limestone from this site for 12 to 15 years. Kenny’s work will be performed in two phases, the first being the excavation of the rock trench for access to and later installation of the primary crushing operation for Vulcan Materials. This operation will directly connect to Kenny’s recently completed McCook Conveyance Tunnel. Included in Phase I is the excavation of 325,000 tons of rock including pre-splitting of walls, stockpiling of rock, ground support and meshing of the rock trench walls, set up of the pumping system, construction of site roads and placement of cement blocks for required quarry road protection berms. All work will be performed under MSHA rules and inspection.
Phase 2 will consist of excavating 432,000 tons of rock creating a starter pit and a slot for a 90 foot wide access road and 200 foot by 200 foot quarry starter pit at the bottom of the slot. The starter pit will be 70 feet into bedrock with the outside wall of the quarry being precision pre-split. The pit will include a 5 foot high safety berm of shot rock to meet MSHA requirements. Also included will be the installation of an 18 inch permanent discharge line from the Clean Water Pond into the starter pit. Two permanent dewatering pumps will be hooked up to an 18 inch discharge line with a third pump supplied for rotating maintenance.
