MCCOOK, IL - TUNNEL

OWNER: MWRDGC
LOCATION: McCook, IL
VALUE: $4,445,000.00 Million

Metropolitan Water Reclamation District is providing Vulcan Materials Corporation a conveyance tunnel to connect the existing Vulcan Quarry in McCook, Illinois with the future MWRDGC Tunnel & Reservoir System, McCook Reservoir. Vulcan will excavate, crush and transfer the rock from the future reservoir to its processing plant in the bottom of the McCook Quarry where it will sell the product into the Chicago construction market. Upon completion of the reservoir, MWRDGC will seal the connection and begin use of the reservoir to complete the storage portion of the TARP system to control combined sewerage overflows into Lake Michigan.

Kenny Construction drilled & blasted 2,133 linear feet of 20 foot wide by 14 foot high tunnel through the dolomite limestone. Rock bolts served as the permanent support for the tunnel.

Kenny then installed a concrete floor in the tunnel to provide working surface for the installation of the conveyor system under another contract.

Also included in the contract was the scaling, meshing and bolting of an existing high wall within the Vulcan Materials McCook Quarry.
