CHICAGO - CALUMET TUNNEL

OWNER: MWRDGC
LOCATION: Chicago, IL
VALUE: $192 Million

This largest of all TARP projects at $194 million consisted of furnishing all materials, labor and equipment required to mine and line 11.54 miles of hard rock tunnel, 30' Ø lined construction shaft 340 feet deep; 30’ diameter work shaft, 336 feet deep, construct 19 lined drop shafts with finished diameter of 7'-2" to 14'-0" and varying in depth from approximately 325 feet to 360 feet; many shafts were blind drilled in rock with four excavated by drill and blast methods and four by raise drilling.

This outstanding project received the AGC of America’s prestigious “Build America Award” for its early completion and its five world records for large diameter tunneling performance.  In the 32’-3” tunnel with a Robbins TBM, Kenny crews achieved a best hour of 14.9 feet, best shift of 96 feet, best day of 242 feet, best 5 day week of 1,064 feet and best month of 3,993 feet.  Concreting was accomplished with similar effort with 192 feet of 30’ diameter tunnel forms receiving 740 cubic yards of concrete every day.
