IDOT - ROUTE 6 RAILROAD

This project consisted of constructing a staged railroad bridge on caissons over US Route 6 in Harvey, IL at the Canadian National Railroad Yard

This bridge is the first stage of a major project to be able to convert the existing two lane road into a five lane highway alleviating a traffic bottleneck that has existed there for years.

The project entailed installing a braced cofferdam and excavating embankments 25 ft. deep within 11 ft. of the center line of the track.  The installation of the caissons also posed construction and engineering challenges.

The bridge project was built in two stages and was delayed due to utility interferences and survey discrepancies.  Despite a three month combined delay, and having to work around the traffic, weather and railroad constraints, the project was finalized within two weeks of the original completion date.

This Project was nominated by IDOT for Contractor of the Year Award in Bridge Construction.
