SUMMER CRITICAL PROGRAM
OWNER: Commonwealth Edison
The main objective of the Summer Critical Program is to complete all necessary electrical and infrastructure construction needs for Commonwealth Edison in the Chicago/Northern Illinois area by the summer months when the demand from the power grid is highest. Since 2004, Kenny has been providing our client with the highest quality of service and commitment to ensure that all projects are complete by June 1st of each year to meet this demand.
Summer Critical 2005
In 2005, the Summer Critical Program consisted of 26 total jobs, 9 of which were substations and 17 overhead and underground electrical distribution jobs. The largest of these projects was the Silver Lake/Pleasant Valley project which included the construction of 2 substation yard expansions at both Pleasant Valley and Silver Lake, Illinois. At Silver Lake substation, a retention pond, a 345kV bus extension and a breaker were installed. A 345kV transformer was installed during the expansion of the Pleasant Valley substation and transmission lines were also built between the two substations to facilitate the expansion of electrical service in the area.
Summer Critical 2006
After successfully completing the 2005 Summer Critical Program, Kenny was awarded a portfolio of 53 projects, consisting of 10 substation (1 of which was a DC-in-a-Box installation), 2 transmission, and 41 electrical distribution jobs for the Summer Critical 2006 Program. Kenny implemented more financial processes to better track daily and weekly cost and improved programmatic processes to streamline the work and to better meet our client's needs. The most notable of these projects was the East Frankfort Substation job which included the installation of a 300mVA automatic transformer and increased the capacity for 5 miles of a 138kV transmission line.
Summer Critical 2007
During the 2007 Program, Kenny improved upon the processes implemented in 2006 and also set up weekly standing meeting with various ComEd Departments, engineers, subcontractors, and KCC personnel to help "over-communicate" any issues that arose during planning, engineering, and/or construction. The program consisted of 75 total projects, including 26 substation (12 of which were DC-in-a-Box installations), 3 transmission, and 46 overhead and underground distribution jobs. The largest of these jobs was at the substation in Plano, IL where a brand new TDC for a 60mVA transformer and a 138kV bus were installed, and two new 34kV distribution lines were built to expand the substation capabilities.
Summer Critical 2008
Currently, the Summer Critical 2008 program consists of 59 total jobs. The portfolio contains 16 substations (2 DCIAB), 2 transmission, and 41 overhead and underground electrical distribution jobs throughout Chicago, surrounding suburbs, and rural areas of Northern and Central Illinois. This year, as a result of our on-going commitment and dedication to excellence, Kenny and ComEd have entered into somewhat of a manager exchange where Kenny Project Managers have been given complete control over their jobs from beginning to end and are able to manage all aspects of the job including ComEd functions. This is in contrast to previous years, where Kenny Project Managers would manage their jobs in conjunction with a ComEd counterpart.
The Summer Critical Program is expected to continue at least through 2010 in the foreseeable future.
