CTA GREEN LINE

Kenny Construction Company provided construction management services as part of a multi-year program to refurbish and expand the Chicago Transit Authority's (CTA) Green Line and extend the life of the nation's second-largest rail transportation system.  The rehabilitation project has added more than 40 years of life to the Green Line, transforming it into one of the most accessible of CTA's rapid transit lines.

Built in the 1890s, decades of wear and tear and tight infrastructure repair dollars had left the 20-mile-long, 22-station Green Line in a state of disrepair.  Kenny's scope for start-to-finish construction management work included project development; oversight of design; quality assurance/quality control; document control; contract administration; field resident engineering services; value engineering; and change-order reviews.  In addition, Kenny oversaw the wrap-up insurance policy and overall safety coordination for the Green Line Lake Street Branch and South Main Line Branch.

The line consists largely of an elevated two-track system with an electrified third rail.  Kenny managed the contractors reconstructing all stations, bringing them up to code. Lead paint was removed and protective coating was applied to the structures.  Column bases were replaced and the structures were repaired or rebuilt.  The tracks were reconstructed along with the traction power and signal systems, and a new fiber-optic communication system was installed.

Kenny was recognized with the Chicago Building Congress Merit Award in 1997, and the project was completed on budget and on schedule in November 1998.  Kenny's joint-venture partner was Consoer Townsend Envirodyne Engineers, Inc.
